Winter School Fashion Project - Investigating fashion through paper and paper through fashion - Lincoln University - 11/01/2010 to 15/01/2010

Lincoln University arranged a winter school for the entire design faculty which includes subjects like Architecture, Interior Design, Fashion, Animation, Graphic, Illustration, Creative Advertising and Fine Art. This winter school mixes student studying different professions into groups to take on a brief, normally in the area they aren’t studying. We have 1 day as an introduction and then 3 days from scratch to answer a brief then the outcomes were commented on in a closing show and now they are displayed in the architecture gallery.

Above are the 2 final designs from the fashion groups, my group consisted of 3 architecture students and is the winning design on the left of the photo.

The design is about the contrast between an urban persons life in the day and night. The right of the design is the day part, colourless, workaholic, powerful shoulder pad and newspaper base. The left hand side is the night life, we created it from leaflets and flyers for clubs and nights out.

Thank you to Lincoln University for this opportunity, it was a fun and interesting week!

Description:
This beautiful, organic device floats around a room cleansing the air of its odours as well as adding a unique and dynamic point of interest into your home. Clearly taking inspiration from the most flowing and calm creation of nature – The jellyfish (as well as mushrooms). I wanted to step away from what an average device looks and acts like and give a fresh, natural and unique approach to the subject. The outcome is a piece of art closely integrated with technology resulting in a functioning concept suitable for your home. In light, the devices shell absorbs the light energy and in the dark this then naturally ‘leaks’ back out into the environment causing a calm glow.

I think with a bit more work this idea can become a beautiful reality instead of a 2D concept. Please try and think beyond the images provided and use your own imagination to see how decorative and delicate (in an atheistical sense) this product can be in any home.

Technical solution:
The ‘body’ of the device is filled by the user with a special liquid which slowly soaks through and causes a chemical reaction with the underside of the body. This reaction causes heat, incense fragrance and purifies the air. These then interact with the air in the room; the heat heats up the air creating a ‘pocket’ of hot air that naturally wants to rise, causing the device to float. The fragrance and purifying elements treat and enhance the air.

Bascially theres a small and simple sensor on the top which is activated when the device to too near the ceiling. When activated the body will contract and release some of the hot air pocket underneath (which is keeping it floating like a hot air balloon) The device then drops but the underneath pocket of air is then being heated up and balances it out again. This same principle can be effective to ovoid the walls of a room, except the shel would contract at an angle.

*One Bloom device recommended for each room.
*Refill the body each week for maximum effect.

This project was produced for the Swirl Smell Fighter Innovation Contest
This design won 2nd place and achieved me a prize of 1000€ (about £900)
A big thank you to everyone who voted and left a comment!
And an even bigger thank you to the swirl team for this opportunity and support!

Urban Nomad Shelter designs for Lincoln University – Architecture course

The brief reads;

‘Explore and design a shelter in one (assigned) site in Lincoln for nomad of a specific-kind
through exploration of sketching, model-making and computer-aided-design.’

My chosen/final design (although it still needs work) is the concept of combining transport and the shelter into one. The first version was really conceptual and it aimed to enhance the environment its in with these roots that feed of and spread around moisture and nutrients. The main flaw in this was the interior space had a lack of light, space and ventilation. This second version now has bigger tracks instead of thin wheels and has a big enough interior space to be liveable. The two large windows both open fully to address the previous issues. Although I would agree it still need working on in areas I know about, but unfortunately I don’t have the time so it will have to do for this deadline.

P.S. At the moment the final version lacks a name which I like to add to all my designs. If you have any suggestions or comments about the name, the design or anything – I’d love to hear them!

Luke.

So my latest project is quite a big one. I intend to learn some new programs to eventually create a very cool and interactive web site. The web site will be for a DJ duo me and my friend are starting up in which we also need to learn how to mix!

I intend to learn some more from my Adobe CS4 – After Effects, Flash and Dreamweaver.
And I will need to learn some audio programs called tractor and Logic Studio.

… Yes, I hope I can finish this project too!

The web page is up now at http://www.standardprocedure.lukeriggall.co.uk

I have created a supporting graphic /slash/ logo in Illustrator and made some of the Layout on InDesign at the moment, as they are what I know. I will be converting that layout into Dreamweaver and after effects so that it will be suitable for the web site.

When each of the genre’s along the bottom of the page are clicked the main graphic logo will be replaced with a fancy particle visualizer (which is a swf file from After Effects) and will play a short mix for that genre.

Keep checking this page or the Standard Procedure site for the latest!

Heres some sketches I have produced today, I needed to work on my sketch skills so I’m trying to sketch everyday.

Today I got used to it again as I hadn’t sketched properly in over a year.

Well I’m improving.

There is no theme to what I will be sketching, I will just look at my digital scrapbook and see what inspires me and I will begin there every day. Today was more architecture and art

This is my first piece of digital art that I have done, I wanted to experiment with new skills and techniques.

Basically not a lot of this is real! Some of it is computer generated from 3D models.

I used a 3D model of a Lamborghini obtained from Google Sketchup’s 3D warehouse, imported into Hypershot, created and applied materials to the clay model, prepared and added an environment then rendered an image. I then added motion blur effects using Photoshop along with a photo of a cheetah and finally a frame.

Will be adding more ‘Digital Art’ as I do them.

** This is a work in progress ** Last updated 14th July 2009

I wanted to design a tailored and organised case suited perfectly for Macbooks (and still functions with others) which enhances the users productivity.

Imagine this scenario; you pack your bag, travel to where you need to be, unpack your back with what you need such as pens, pencils, your work, laptop, mouse etc… You do what you need to do then pack it all back into the bag.

Such a waste of time, this design speeds up this unpacking process, enabling the user to start work quickly and easily.

You get to where you need to be, open the case and everythings set up where you want it, at the ready and allows you to start your work in an instant!

All your equipment, extremely organised, efficient and at the ready wherever you are. All in a very luxurious and completely unique case.

- Holds iPod/iPhone, earphones, pens, pencils, ruler, Macbook, mouse and papers
- Crisp modern design; Totally unique
- Rubber sealed to be water tight
- Sliding mouse tray for left and right handed users
- Sliding secondary tray (*original version – a drink or a notepad with your brief on to refer to)
- Off-Center handle to counter balance the weight of the Macbook

Available in a choice of woods; Oak, Walnut, Cedar, Teak, Cherry and possibly glossy white.

Check back here to follow this projects progress.
