Lincoln university assignment 1

Title | Nomad Shelter
Module | ARC1002M – Design Process and Communication
Brief | ‘Explore and design a shelter in one (assigned) site in Lincoln for nomad of a specific-kind
through exploration of sketching, model-making and computer-aided-design.’

Downloads |
soon…

Additional info |

My chosen/final design (although it still needs work) is the concept of combining transport and the shelter into one. The first version was really conceptual and it aimed to enhance the environment its in with these roots that feed of and spread around moisture and nutrients. The main flaw in this was the interior space had a lack of light, space and ventilation. This second version now has bigger tracks instead of thin wheels and has a big enough interior space to be liveable. The two large windows both open fully to address the previous issues. Although I would agree it still need working on in areas I know about, but unfortunately I don’t have the time so it will have to do for this deadline.

P.S. At the moment the final version lacks a name which I like to add to all my designs. If you have any suggestions or comments about the name, the design or anything – I’d love to hear them!

A couple of visualizations that I used to present my ideas to the principle of my college. He was interested in re-decorating mainly the corridors in some way as they are badly painted breeze blocks at the moment. I came up with the idea to clad the breeze blocks in panels as this would be a quick and easy way to hide them.

The top 2 panels would be painted white and the bottom two panels would be grooved wood. There is a separation of about 5mm between the panels, it would be hard to make it seamless so leaving a gap on purpose seemed like the best choice.

Then there are random panels of colour around to add a modern school theme and brighten is all up. Lighting could also be integrated into the ceiling so there are 2 strips of lights down the sides of the roof.

The budget for this project is around £10k and would possibly be done in the near future. The purpose of this was to evoke ideas and get the ball rolling for the college, not a final design.

Contemporary, extra large house design. Underground floor keeps storage in one place and acts as a massive area for a workshop. Has a drive directly into the basement for convenience.

One whole side of the building is glass as well as the bedroom which is located in the middle on the top floor. There is a small bathroom beside the bedroom and then a set of stairs down onto the main floor.

The main floor is a very large and open plan space. The center stage is a large area for a lounge with a massive, custom made, 3 sided 90 degree sofa. There would be speakers in the back wall, in the floor, ceiling and in the front column which also houses a very large display.

At the back wall is the kitchen which is a massive open plan kitchen area and can also be a place to dine. There is a large amount of room on the ground floor to play around with.

There is a basement floor where they’re would be a drive going directly into this. On the basement floor could be a massive workshop, mood lit bathroom, bedrooms and lots of storage.

I have placed 4 deck/ lounger chairs on the open, flat area on the first floor with doors out to access them.

The main building would be rendered in white and then selected walls would be cedar clad like the middle support wall. This enhances the shape as the white structure contrasts well with the selected wooden walls.

Contemporary, extra small, low cost housing solution for use as a studio, outhouse or additional home. A basement floor keeps storage in one place and reduces the visual impact on the landscape.

The shape is rectangular but on the main building the back side has a wall that has been pulled out at an angle to make way for a front door and angled entrance.

One whole wall would be glass and then in the garage block on the left would be randomized glass strip windows.

The building is white render, stone and glass with the possibility that it can be extended with wooden additions.

The Honeycomb house is a small project to explore how hexagons can work together.

The picture displays four small pods, 2 medium pods and one large/main pod. Each of these pods would have a different purpose, as different rooms would in an ordinary house.

The layout would be thought through to make sure it works efficiently as a house. Each pod has one, two or three doors/openings into the next pod. The majority of the walls would be windows to allow in a lot of light.

There is a good sized courtyard in the middle with wooden decking, a small seating area fitted on the right side with a fireplace and the whole building sits on a hexagon shaped platform. The main pods would be white rendered and the roofs could be copper which would weather nicely in time.

A design that I produced to have done for my parents house’s lounge. There is a TV which is about 40”’s in the middle of the wall with a modern flat screen fireplace underneath. There is a shape each side of the fake chimney that has been pushed inwards and is clad in stone. Then there are 4 small built in shelves with lighting each side of the wall. There would be ceiling & wall speakers to keep the design minimal.

A couple of visualizations that I used before I redecorated my bedroom, mostly to an accurate scale. There is a 32” TV in the wall and speakers next to it, I have built a webcam also into the wall under the TV. There is a custom made piece of furniture under the TV to hold any equipment including the sub-woofer.

The wardrobe and desk are on the right wall, window on the left and a double bed on the closest wall with a chair and a small table next to it.

Needless to say, my bedroom doesn’t look like this, I decided I didn’t want to pay for it.
